Our Business

Northwestern Mutual, its subsidiaries and affiliates offer insurance, investment products and advisory services that address client needs for financial protection, capital accumulation, and estate preservation and distribution. Products and services for the personal, business, estate and pension markets include permanent and term life insurance, disability income insurance, long-term care insurance, annuities, trust services and mutual funds.

Purpose

As a mutual company, Northwestern Mutual exists for the benefit of its policyowners and clients. The company helps its policyowners and clients protect against financial risk and achieve financial security. Participating policyowners share in the financial results of the company through dividends, receiving their insurance at the lowest possible cost.

3.3 million policyowners holding 5 million policies with $1 trillion worth of life insurance protection in force.

Size

$157 billion in assets. $21 billion in revenues. Ranked 110th on the 2008 Fortune 500.

Investments

$132 billion in bonds, mortgage loans, real estate, stocks and other investments.

Policy Benefits

$5.6 billion of benefits paid to policyowners or their beneficiaries.

Disability Income

386,000 policyowners with 637,000 policies – the company expects to pay $160 million in dividends to disability income policyowners in 2008.

Long-Term Care

77,000 policies in force with the Northwestern Long Term Care Insurance Company – it expects to pay $6.1 million in dividends to policyowners in 2008.

Annuities

$14.8 billion of assets under management in 306,000 client contracts.

Investment Products

$50 billion in assets under management – $10.9 billion in mutual fund sales in 2007.

  • Received the best possible insurance financial strength ratings from the four major rating agencies in 2008: Standard & Poor’s, Moody’s Investors Service, Fitch Ratings and A.M. Best.
